Getting Your Vehicle Ready for Inspection

In North Carolina, getting your vehicle inspected each year is required by law. It’s also an important step to keep you and others safe on the road. Being prepared can save you time, stress, and even money. Here’s how to get ready for your next inspection — and why making an appointment at Norris Automotive or Elite Motor Cars is your best move.

1. Know What Type of Inspection You Need

  • Safety Inspection – Required statewide. It checks basics like brakes, lights, tires, horn, windshield wipers, mirrors, and steering.
  • Emissions Inspection – Required in certain counties, including Alamance. It evaluates the vehicle’s emissions control systems to help reduce air pollution.

North Carolina requires two types of inspections depending on your county:

2. Check Your Registration and Insurance

Make sure your vehicle registration is current and your insurance is active. You’ll need both when you go in for your inspection. It’s probably in your glovebox!

Pro Tip: If your registration is expiring soon, it’s best to get your car inspected before renewal time so you don’t run into any delays.

3. Do a Quick DIY Pre-Check

Before bringing your car in, take 15 minutes to do a simple walkaround:

  • Turn on all exterior lights and check that they work.
  • Test your horn, windshield wipers, and turn signals.
  • Check tire tread and pressure.
  • Make sure your check engine light is off. It looks like this when it’s NOT off:We fail lots of vehicles for this one thing.
  • Top off fluids like windshield washer and coolant.

Catching small issues now can save you from failing the inspection and needing a second trip.

4. Bring Required Documents

You’ll need:

  • Your vehicle’s current registration.
  • A valid form of payment for the inspection fee. Safety inspection is $13.60, and the Safety and Emissions is $30. We accept cash or credit cards.
